These builds aren't code-signed yet
Signing certificates cost money that a pre-release app hasn't earned, so both macOS and Windows will warn you the first time you open LayerShot. That warning means “we can't verify who made this”, not “we found something harmful” — but you should treat it seriously with any download, including this one. Here is exactly what you'll see and what to click.
Signed builds are on the roadmap before the app goes on sale.
macOS says “Apple could not verify this app”
Modern macOS gives this dialog only two buttons — Move to Trash and Cancel. There is no “open anyway” in the dialog itself, and the old Control-click shortcut no longer works. The way through is System Settings:
- Open the .dmg and drag LayerShot into your Applications folder.
- Open it once from Applications. The warning appears — click Cancel, not Move to Trash.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Scroll to the Security section. You'll see “LayerShot was blocked to protect your Mac”.
- Click Open Anyway, then authenticate with Touch ID or your password.
- Click Open in the confirmation dialog. macOS remembers the decision — you only do this once.
Prefer the terminal?
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/LayerShot.appThis strips the quarantine flag that triggers the check. Only run it on downloads you actually trust — it is the same command that defeats the warning for genuine malware.
LayerShot will then ask for Screen Recording permission, which macOS requires for any screenshot. Grant it, then quit and reopen the app — macOS caches the previous answer for the life of the process.
